Check Who Funded the Study
We had some fun with this episode. Jason had found a couple of pro orange juice studies that we decided to dig into. I was under the impression that the debate on whether sugary beverages were good for you was largely settled. So I wasn’t sure what we were about to get into.
We first took a look at this study, where 10 healthy women were given a glass of orange juice daily for 2 months. Favorable effects were found with various metabolic markers (glucose, LDL cholesterol, and insulin sensitivity) as well as the gut microbiota. Were these findings really due to the orange juice? Who knows, but it was interesting.
Next we took a look at this study where 3 groups of 10 people consumed a high fat, high carbohydrate meal and drank either water, a high glucose drink, or orange juice. They found that the first two groups had increased levels of oxidative and inflammatory markers, but the third group consuming the orange juice did not. This was interesting and then Zac looked up who funded the study. The Florida Department of Citrus! Very interesting indeed.
We ended the podcast with an in depth discussion of our favorite fast food meals. Great information there!
